Product trends in fiber optic lasers in industrial applications

October 06, 2023

The compact and efficient fiber laser replaces the industrial application of Nd:YAG lasers and has new applications in telecommunications. Lasers that use fiber optics as resonant cavities have entered the industrial arena and are beginning to replace larger, more cumbersome devices.

In a typical fiber laser, the core of a single mode fiber incorporates erbium or ytterbium. A group of laser diodes, usually arranged in a tree-like shape, as a pump into the fiber, through which the laser of the corresponding wavelength is emitted. Many fiber lasers developed for industrial use are based on double-cladding pumping technology, which pumps the energy of the pump light into the inner cladding (which itself is transported through the outer cladding wrapped around the inner cladding) and then passes it to the core. of.
The advantage of this design is that it allows more energy to enter the fiber. By designing the energy concentrator to increase the output power of the laser, it is estimated that the converted output power can reach about 50W.
Most fiber lasers on the market today have output powers between 1W and 25W, however higher output should be feasible. The main application areas are in the processing of materials, especially marking. About 60% of industrial fiber lasers without communication ports are used in the marking field.

The technology from printing to soldering double-clad fiber lasers was first developed by Polaroid Corp. (Cambridge, MA) in 1992, mainly for printing. SDL purchased this technology from Polaroid in 1998 and inherited it when JDS Uniphase acquired SDL.
Fiber lasers are widely used in areas such as flexographic printing where lasers etch the surface of the print media. Fiber lasers can reach 25 W compared to diode lasers with a power of only 0.5W. Higher power means more production and greater profit. For marking purposes, fiber lasers are more compact than Nd:YAG lasers currently used in this field. It also does not require a complex optical system like YAG and is air cooled. The reason people choose fiber lasers is because of their compactness, low energy consumption and easy integration. The laser's light energy conversion efficiency is very high.
Fiber lasers are also used in micro-welding, micro-cutting, and micro-bending processes, which are increasing with the growth of portable electronic products such as notes and disk drives. On the other hand, since the fiber laser cannot use the Q switch, it cannot be applied to engraving metal and plastic. But they are mold lockable.
